Time to play a little bit around the top, heart and base! Making your own signature scent can be exciting, and a little more information about the same is only a blessing…
Perfumers from all times have put in their heart and soul into the art of creating perfumes, and nothing can ever beat their determination and the talent in creating a fragrance. But what if you could create your own signature scent and wear it all the time? Does it sound exciting? It does, right. The thought of becoming a perfumer of your own scent is taking your passion for perfumes to another height and very original, like you are not going anywhere to buy it and choose out of the several. This one is just yours. Unapologetically, yours!
Let’s start from the scratch, perfumes are another world altogether when it comes to gathering knowledge about them. There is nothing like too much knowledge here, it’s always intriguing, no matter how much you read about it.
When you first spray a perfume on your skin, there is an order that the ‘notes’ follow. The top notes are the ones that you first smell, and the first ones to disappear as well. These last for about 10-15 minutes. Then we have the heart notes, that appear as the top notes vanish. They are mostly oriental, woody, fresh or floral. Base notes of any perfume are the foundation that upholds the entire fragrance together with some effortless blending. They are those that long last, for about 4 to 5 hours mostly on your skin.
Gather your stuff, here are the ingredients you would need for a DIY perfume:
- Oil- preferably odourless (jojoba, almost or grape seed)
- Spirit of your choice
- Bottled water
- Essential oils
- Coffee filter
- Funnel
- Glass containers
Let’s learn how to go about it:
- Pour the carrier oil into the glass bottle.
- Add your essential oils. Mostly 30 drops each for the top, heart and base notes. Consider the ratio as 20% base, 50% heart and 30% top.
- Add spirit of your choice to the same, preferable high quality as then the content of your budding perfume will last longer.
- Now that you have mixed all the ingredients, you need to let it sit for 48 hours. However, if you need your scent to be strong, you may want to let it sit for weeks.
- When you are done with the scent, you need to add about 2 tablespoon of bottled water to your perfume.
- Soon after you are done adding water, you need to shake the bottle vigorously for a minute or so, to ensure it is blended well with the ingredients.
- Transfer the perfume to another bottle using a coffee filter and funnel. Make sure the perfume is later stored in a clean, dark glass bottle.
